Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
