Olympians Appeal on Iranian Authorities to Prevent Execution of Boxing Champion
More than two dozen Olympic medallists, coaches and further global sports figures have endorsed a statement urging a halt to the death penalty of a boxing champion and coach, who is on death row in Iran.
Escalating Global Anger
During rising worldwide anger over the nation's escalating use of capital punishment as a tool of oppression, the strongly worded appeal censures the Iranian regime's decision to uphold the capital punishment of the boxing champion.
The athlete, 30, from the city in the northern province, was arrested for participating in countrywide demonstrations in two thousand nineteen and charged of supporting an opposition group. He has endured 60 months in detention, where he has been abused and kept in solitary confinement.
“Sport is designed to promote faith, togetherness, and fortitude,” the signatories expressed. “The death penalty of a titleholder for his political views is a clear violation on these values and a admonition to any competitor who ventures to speak out.
Record of Killing Athletes
The appeal noted that the boxer's case was not an isolated one and highlighted the country's past of sentencing to death sports champions for their beliefs, for example a football captain, captain of the national football team, and Fourouzan Abdi, skipper of the national women’s volleyball team. In two thousand twenty, an athlete, a 27-year national wrestling champion, was also executed.
Other endorsers to the letter comprise a sailing champion, who captained the inaugural female-only team in a global yacht race and was the pioneering lady to be awarded a prestigious yachting trophy; the previous skipper of the soccer side Craig Foster; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the global tournament.
Arrest and Unjust Proceedings
The athlete was arrested in March 2020. The accusations against him entailed “spreading corruption on Earth through arson and destruction of government belongings”. His ruling has been overturned on two occasions but on the fourth of October it was upheld on the third occasion. His legal proceedings was denounced as “grossly unfair” by rights defenders and bodies.
Urging to UN
The appeal to prevent Vafaei Sani’s death sentence is subsequent to a previous statement to the United Nations official for human rights, backed by more than 100 advocates and organizations, calling for action to avert the sports figure's death.
Capital Punishment Escalation
According to findings, there is an “execution crisis in the country, which has reached shocking dimensions”. In 2023, officials sentenced at least over 850 people – a forty-eight percent surge on the previous year. In the prior period, data showed nearly a thousand executions, constituting the maximum count since 2015. In excess of eight hundred people have been executed so far in 2025.
Political prisoners and protesters are focus, notably in the aftermath of the 2022 uprising. Specialists say the Iranian authorities have used the capital punishment to quell dissent, create apprehension among the public and strengthen their hold on power.
