McLaren Racing Blames Competitors for Piastri-Norris Collision

Wheel flies off racing car after impact between Piastri and Norris

A wheel detaches from the McLaren of Norris after he crashed into fellow driver Oscar Piastri at the start of the US GP short race.

McLaren F1 team bosses Brown and Stella blamed rival drivers for the incident between Oscar Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the US GP sprint event.

The Australian driver, leading his teammate in the championship by twenty-two points, bounced into his fellow McLaren driver after hitting the Hulkenberg.

The incident took both McLaren drivers from the race, along with Aston Martin's Alonso, who was on the inner side of Hulkenberg.

McLaren Leaders Express Disappointment Over Crash

Zak Brown, the team's chief executive officer, told broadcasters that some of the driving at the start was "inexperienced", stating: "Clearly Hulkenberg made contact with Oscar and he had no business being where he was."

The team boss Andrea Stella commented: "The reaction is that we are displeased that we didn't have the chance to compete."

"It is unexpected that some drivers with a lot of experience don't act with appropriate caution. Enter the first corner, make sure you don't damage other drivers and continue."

McLaren suggested that the team principal was pointing to both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.

Differing Perspectives on the Incident

Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Hill, commentating for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he believed Piastri had not shown enough awareness of the dangers of the first corner of an F1 race when he chose to cut back to try to pass his teammate.

The Australian had a stronger launch than the Briton and initially challenged on the outside on the uphill approach to the turn.

However he then moved inside in an effort to get a run on his teammate on the way out, only to hit Hulkenberg.

Racer Comments After the Collision

The McLaren driver said: "Not ideal but I did not see what happened, I tried to move inside on Norris and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Norris. Unfortunate."

Norris said: "I just got hit, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back things happened and I just was unfortunate and was struck because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers further back just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I believed I was in the right place on the inside, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the middle."

The Sauber driver, who had qualified a season-best fourth place, said: "Major disappointment. All the good work from the previous day in the trash. Just messy."

"Oscar turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the undercut and way out of the first corner but I can't just disappear."

"I had Alonso attack on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to leave space for him and then Piastri steered inward and the contact was unavoidable."

Post-Crash and McLaren's Reaction

The team will review the incident with their drivers but only after the event weekend. Both cars needed significant repairs before qualifying session at 22:00 BST on the weekend.

The team principal said: "Overall displeased but we accept it, we are now concentrating on repairing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the event from there."

"We are in a strong position from our performance point of view so I trust we have the possibility to compete, race normally and utilize our performance."

"The points are the key thing, I prefer not to talk about bad intentions, just caution. A bit more care would be good for everyone."

Standings Impact

The race was taken by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who gained ground on both team racers in the championship - he is now 55 points behind the Australian and 33 adrift of Norris.

Stella said: "The implication is what the maths says - we lost eight points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two strong racers. We anticipate just some standard competition."

Verstappen said he was approaching the championship race by race.
