The daughter of previous South African Leader Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror charges at the start of her court case in the port city of the city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being prosecuted over comments she made on digital networks several years back during violent demonstrations in South Africa that came after the arrest of her father.
A period of disorder in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including theft and arson, left at least three hundred killed and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).
She has been accused of fuelling this turmoil and is charged with accusations of incitement to commit terrorism and public disorder.
Context of the Legal Matter
The protests were concentrated in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and were triggered by the ex-leader's detention for ignoring a judicial ruling to testify at an inquiry into claims of graft while he was holding office.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has consistently denied the accusations against her, with her legal representative previously describing the prosecution's evidence as insufficient.
She has also repeatedly stated the charges against her were an attempt to address political scores with her father after he started his own party and campaigned against the African National Congress.
Backing and Legal Defense
This was echoed by the foundation, which said the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the former president and his relatives.
A handful of supporters from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the judicial building, while her parent and other party leaders participated in the hearings inside.
The defense has argued that the evidence presented by prosecutors is inadequate and fails to provide concrete proof for a conviction.
Main Aspects of the Case
- Online comments from the past form the foundation of the state's evidence
- Fatal demonstrations in recent years resulted in substantial deaths and financial damage
- The defendant is charged with multiple charges of provocation to violence
- Judicial proceedings are anticipated to continue for multiple weeks
The trial continues as all parties present their arguments before the court in what is expected to be a highly monitored court case with major politically charged implications for South Africa.
